JOB DESCRIPTION: Human Resources announces an opening for an Hourly Lifeguard IV & Instructor I-IV position in the Facilities & Operations Department with the Aquatics Office.
Responsible for the delivery of water safety and swimming instruction to elementary and high school physical education classes, and community-based Aquatics School programs. Assist in the day-to-day operations of the aquatic facility including, but not limited to, patron surveillance, facility maintenance, front desk management, custodial maintenance and customer service.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, first aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration certification
Instructor Certification in: Water Safety, Lifeguarding preferred
Training as a swimming pool operator from a local or national organization preferred
A valid driver’s license, proof of insurability, and safe driving record.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Comprehensive knowledge of swimming lesson plans and effective methods of instructing children and youth.
Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety instructional techniques
Ability to instruct large groups of elementary and high school age children and adults in basic and advanced aquatic skills
Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding rescue techniques
Knowledge of the principles and practices of facility rules, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of aquatic facility management concepts, including patron surveillance, and water quality and sanitation standards.
Knowledge of procedures for handling cash transactions and cash register operations
Knowledge of water quality management including the operation of filter and disinfection systems
Experience motivating and supervising lifeguarding teams
Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
Public relations and leadership skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, facilities and maintenance department staff, PRCR personnel, and general public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed.).
Ensures the safety of the patrons by enforcing facility rules, regulation and APS policies and procedures.
Responds to emergency situations and renders appropriate first aid
Instructs the elementary and high school Water safety program
Instructs Aquatics School program as assigned and based on experience and training
Supervises and performs lifeguard as assigned and based on training
Responsible for the completion of daily and weekly pool equipment and filter room maintenance including vacuuming, brushing, backwashing
Assists with the delivery of staff in-service program
Prepares instructional program course records and statistical reports
Participates in the completion of daily records as outlined in the logbook
Participates in the daily custodial and overall maintenance of the building
Performs minor maintenance and repair of swimming pool and building equipment
Completes daily facility inspections and reports areas of concern to management
Performs front desk duties such as greeting patrons, selling memberships and passes and the collection of fees
Completes incident/accident reports as needed
Carries out additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator, the Aquatic Manager, or the Pool Manager
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES: Work requires walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, sitting, lifting and moving heavy items, and operating office equipment. Lifeguarding responsibilities requires physical strength and agility to remove or assist a distressed person in the swimming pool.
HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Work involves exposure to swimming pool chemicals including chlorine, potential exposure to blood and body fluids at the scene of an injury or accident. Exposure to swimming pool chemicals may require the use of goggles, apron, rubber gloves, and facemasks.
The individual will work a flexible 8-hours schedule that may start as early as 5:00 am end as late at 10:00 pm as needed to ensure the appropriate coverage of the pool and the instructional program.
SALARY: Salary range based on 25/26 pay plan.
